“Borders are set up to define the places that are safe and unsafe, to distinguish us from them.” – Gloria Anzaldúa

Equis was my Solo Undergraduate Exhibition at the Anna Leonowens Gallery in Halifax, Nova Scotia. This interdisciplinary show consisted of textiles, video and performance work where I was using flags and banners as a way of breaking rules, and boundaries, in the hopes of “disseminating borders”. The title of the show was a reference to the letter “X” or “equis” is formed by a convergence of lines, and how similarly to weaving, this demonstrates the complexity and layers of my Venezuelan-Canadian identity. The letter “X” also references the unknown, the “other”, and represents the Roman numeral ten, representing my tenth year living in Canada.
